Policing in Flagstaff - Power and Pain
Through my studies, I understand that our criminal justice system is far from perfect. There is a plethora of examples that showcase this ranging from excessive use-of-force, plea bargaining, mass incarceration and racial disparities within our prisons. One part of our system, policing, is no different. Policing is an issue that combines identities, history and social values into a complex web that is difficult to untangle. There is never a single cause that leads to abuse or misconduct. Each officer remains their own agent capable of making their own decisions. Each community member they interact with are also their own agents. However, they are influenced by social forces that we rarely acknowledge. Thus, if we are to work towards a solution then we need to study individual departments to see how their situation is unique.
On this page you will find the finalized version of the project. Included are photos and graphics that help explain and visualize the cultural values and practices of the Flagstaff Police Department. It also includes the stories of people who had been apprehended by the department.
